Reading Time: 2mins

This week is HOT.
You’ve probably felt it the second you stepped outside here in Chicagoland. High temperatures are one thing, but the combination of heat and humidity makes every run feel harder than normal.
I’m making adjustments to my own training this week. I’ve cut back both my mileage and my intensity—not because I’m losing fitness, but because I’m respecting the conditions.
Remember: your body doesn’t know pace. It knows effort.
Trying to force your usual splits on a 90° humid day is a great way to dig yourself into a hole that takes days to recover from. Sometimes the smartest training decision is simply slowing down, shortening the run, moving it earlier in the morning, or taking the day off altogether.
Fitness isn’t built from one heroic workout. It’s built from months of consistent training.
Don’t let one hot week derail an entire season.
Trying to force your usual splits on a 90° humid day is a great way to dig yourself into a hole that takes days to recover from.
If you’re heading out for a run this week:
Slow your pace and run by effort.
Hydrate before, during, and after your run.
Consider shortening your workout, moving it indoors, or getting out earlier.
Give yourself permission to adjust the plan.
The weather will cool off. Your fitness will still be there.
Train smart this week so you can keep training next week.
Your best is yet to come!
