How to Run Your First 5K

Reading Time: 2mins

It’s that time of year again. It’s still cold outside but winter is mostly done, the sun is shining regularly, and we’re all just itching for some really nice spring weather

It’s also the time of year when the Evanston Running Club is getting ready to start their FREE 0 to 5K training program!

If you’ve ever wanted to train for a 5K, this is an amazing opportunity.

Every year the Evanston Running Club helps those who have never run before train for and complete their first 5K. It’s a 12 week walk-to-run program offered for free to the community.

The program starts on Sunday March 16th with the goal race of the Ricky Byrdsong Race Against Hate on Father’s Day June 15th, 2025

Evanston Running Club’s free 0-5K group training runs begins Sunday March 16th

The core of the program are the Sunday group runs where everyone gets together to train at the Arrington Lagoon in Evanston. It’s a fun and friendly environment filled with locals all working towards the goal of completing a 5K.

There are 3 separate training groups in this program based on what people are planning to do on race day: walk the race, walk/run the race, or run the race. The runners are planning to run the whole race at the end of the program but do the entirety of the training using walk/run intervals.

Signing up for the Evanston Running Club’s 0-5K program is the most fun and social way to complete your first 5K. Also, if you’re nervous to do it alone, you can invite a friend or family member to do it with you!
