Last week one of my patient’s came in saying that even though his running mileage hasn’t increased that much, he was feeling his ‘marathon leg’ come back When I asked him what he meant by that, he described this achiness which was felt deep throughout his whole leg From his hips, through his hamstring, and even into his calf some He said that’s what his leg felt like after his last marathon After he described all this to me, I knew exactly what he was experiencing A deep sense of ache throughout the leg is common when running is someone’s main sport This typically comes on as running mileage begins to ramp up and the leg starts saying “Hey man these are a lot of miles you’re asking me to do” Or in a similar way “Hey man these are some pretty intense runs you’re asking me to do” All the leg is really asking for is some single leg strengthening 🙂 A lot of times we get caught up in running more and having that be the main source of exercise for us Knowing that we don’t really want to do any strength training and that maybe we don’t really know what to do, we leave cross training out of our training altogether Leading to ‘marathon leg’ and similar ailments All I did for this patient was give him a series of single leg strengthening movements and his body seemed to respond most positively to Single Leg Romanian Deadlifts (RDLs) After giving them to him for homework, he proudly reported to me in a message “100% better tonight on my marathon leg.” Great job so far But I took it a step further I decided to record myself doing 3 sets of 10 Single Leg RDLs and posting it on my YouTube channel for my patient (and the world) to follow along |
All you’ll need for the workout is a space to be barefoot There are many different ways to make it easier or harder Using no weight is easier than using a weight Heavier weight is harder than lighter Having a small stool or chair to touch at the bottom of the movement is easier than not having anything to touch at all You might have to mix and match things based on your abilities If you enjoy the workout, please like and subscribe to my YouTube channel for more!
